“There seems to be some controversy about my not mentioning every film by name last night before announcing the Best Picture award,” Pacino detailed in a statement obtained Monday by TheWrap. “I just want to be clear it was not my intention to omit them, rather a choice by the producers not to have them said again since they were highlighted individually throughout the ceremony.”

The statement came after social media users reacted to Pacino coming out to present the final award of the evening and choosing to not name the nominees before declaring “Oppenheimer” the winner.

“Ten wonderful films were nominated, but only one will take the award for Best Picture,” he said in the telecast. Clips of all the Best Picture nominees had played throughout the ceremony, but he did not revisit them in his introduction.

Pacino simply came out, said, “I have to go to the envelope for that, and I will. Here it comes. And my eyes see: ‘Oppenheimer.'”

The reaction in the room started out rather muted, almost as if the audience was confused on whether “Oppenheimer” had actually won or not.

“I’m obsessed with the way Al Pacino announced ‘Oppenheimer’ as Best Picture.’ Couldn’t have been more chaotic or confusing,” one X (formerly Twitter) user wrote in response.

“I realize being nominated is a huge milestone in one’s life and to not be fully recognized is offensive and hurtful,” Pacino went on to say in Monday’s statement. “I say this as someone who profoundly relates with filmmakers, actors and producers, so I deeply empathize with those who have been slighted by this oversight and it’s why I felt it necessary to make this statement.”

“Oppenheimer” would end the night with seven Academy Awards after being nominated in 13 categories.

Curtis was at the ceremony to help present the Best Supporting Actress Oscar to Da’Vine Joy Randolph for her work in “The Holdovers.” (It’s Oscar tradition to have the previous year’s recipient present that year’s winner.) Curtis was one of several past winners there to introduce the new crop of nominees, and was joined onstage by Regina King, Lupita Nyong’o, Mary Steenburgen and Rita Moreno. It was a very memorable moment.

Considering that Curtis’ post-Oscars photos at In-N-Out are in broad daylight, she definitely left the ceremony super early, since it crept into the nighttime hours in Los Angeles after starting around 4 p.m.

If you’re wondering what In-N-Out Curtis visited, it was the location on Cahuenga Boulevard, just up the street from where the Oscars take place at the Dolby Theatre. You can see the Universal City Hilton in the background, with the drive-thru lane buttressing the Universal City Nissan dealership. This is the same In-N-Out where Jeffrey Epstein’s accomplice and business partner Ghislaine Maxwell was memorably photographed enjoying a burger and a book in 2019.

Earlier this awards season, Paul Giamatti was spotted at a Westwood In-N-Out after the Golden Globes, trophy in hand. And Oscar host Jimmy Kimmel has noted that stopping by In-N-Out after the ceremony has become an annual tradition.

“Nothing against McDonald’s, but on award show night, it’s In-N-Out,” Kimmel said.

“It was a pinch-me moment for us,” the executive wrote in a Monday memo to employees obtained by TheWrap. “While the parties may be over, I am not done celebrating all of you.”

In addition to “Oppenheimer,” Universal’s specialty division Focus Features got in the win column with “The Holdovers,” with Da’Vine Joy Randolph winning for Best Supporting Actress for her performance as mourning school cook Mary Lamb.

“To the team at Focus, you continue to be the best at what you do — to find those deeply human stories that leave massive marks on our hearts like ‘The Holdovers,’ and make us want to send thank you notes to our favorite teachers,” she wrote.

“Oppenheimer” arrived at Universal after Nolan and his production company Syncopy ended a nearly two-decade partnership with Warner Bros. in 2021, beginning a fierce competition for the filmmaker’s next project. Universal landed the film after agreeing to commit $200 million in production and marketing spending towards the film and releasing the film in Nolan’s customary mid-July release slot with an extensive theatrical window.

“It started with a visit to Chris and Emma’s home, back in 2021. Reading the script for ‘Oppenheimer’ in Chris’s office, I was mesmerized as one of the most impactful moments in history felt overwhelmingly resonant today,” Langley wrote. “Soon after, our entire film group — and the entire company — rallied around this piece. From production to marketing to distribution, MSNBC to Peacock to our full symphony effort, our teams came together to share this story and show what makes this company unique.”

After grossing $957 million at the global box office — making it the highest grossing Best Picture winner in 20 years — “Oppenheimer” took the awards circuit by storm, becoming the 11th film to win the top prize at the Producers, Directors and Screen Actors Guild Awards before taking the top Oscar.

The release of “Oppenheimer” also came just after the start of the SAG-AFTRA strike on July 14, which left Nolan alone to promote the film during the prime of its theatrical run until the strike ended in November. SAG-AFTRA officially called the strike in the middle of the “Oppenheimer” premiere in London, leading the film’s cast to walk out.

The comedian presented the Academy Award for Best Sound on Sunday. But before naming the winner (“The Zone of Interest”), Mulaney riffed on how important sound is for hearing iconic lines forever memorialized in film — including an infamous one from “Madame Web.”

“You know, for years, movies didn’t have sound and then they figured it out. Some people say that the silent era was the golden era of film. These people are difficult and insane,” Mulaney began. “Without sound, we wouldn’t have been able to hear such classic lines as ‘You’re gonna need a bigger boat,’ ‘I’ll have what she’s having’ and ‘He was in the Amazon with my mother when she was researching spiders just before she died.’”

“ONCE AGAIN …. would @TheAcademy consider #JohnMulaney to host #theoscars please?” one viewer tweeted. “He’s giving Billy Crystal. He’s right there, he sings, dances and it flows. He’s right. there. k, thx, bye.”

“Duuuude #johnmulaney just dropped a madame web reference while presenting for best sound,” another wrote on X. “Yes!”

The “researching spiders in the Amazon” line can be heard in the “Madame Web” trailer from the lips of Dakota Johnson, who portrays Cassandra Web in the latest Sony property in association with Marvel — although, that exact line did not appear in the final cut.

While viewers were instantly pleased by the trailer reference, it’s worth noting Mulaney indeed hosted the Academy’s (non-televised) Governors Awards in January and was well received in the room.

Mulaney’s monologue continued, “Or what about that moment in ‘Field of Dreams’ when we hear ‘If you build it, he will come.’ And then Costner does it, he builds a baseball field. I guess he doesn’t build it. He mows down corn and then there is a field and then he’s like, ‘I’m gonna watch ghosts play baseball.’ And the bank is like, ‘You want to pay your mortgage?’ And he’s like, ‘Nah, I’m gonna watch ghosts play baseball.’”

“And then he finds James Earl Jones who wrote ‘The Boat Rocker,’ which I thought was a real book deep into my 20s, and he’s like, ‘People will come, Ray.’ He’s the only one with a financial plan. But what’s weird is Timothy Busfield pushes little Gaby Hoffmann off the bleachers and she falls down and she’s unconscious,” he went on. “Then Burt Lancaster’s Moonlight Graham and he comes up and he pats her on the back a couple of times, and he’s like, ‘Hot dog stuck in her throat.’ And then he can’t go back in the game because I guess there’s a rule in ghost baseball, that if you leave the field at any point to become an elderly ghost and do the Heimlich maneuver, you can’t return to the field. I love ‘Field of Dreams.’ That should win Best Picture, though they’ll probably go with one of this year’s.”

“All of our choices were made to reflect and confront us in the present, not to say look what they did then, rather look what we do now. Our film shows where dehumanization leads at its worst. It’s shaped all of our past and present,” Glazer said during his acceptance speech Sunday night.

“Zone of Interest,” the Oscar winner for Best International Picture, is loosely based on the 2014 novel by Martin Amis, which itself was based on real events. It follows the mundane daily lives of Nazi commandant Rudolf Höss and his family, who live in their idyllic home next to the Auschwitz concentration camp.

“Right now, we stand here as men who refute their Jewishness and the Holocaust being hijacked by an occupation which has led to conflict for so many innocent people. Whether the victims of Oct. 7 in Israel or the ongoing attack on Gaza, all are victims of this dehumanization. How do we resist?” Glazer continued in his speech.

It’s Glazer’s comments where some felt that he was refuting Jewishness itself, rather than how it’s been used, that has caused the greatest amount of controversy. Todd Richman, the cochair of the Democratic Majority for Israel, called the speech “disappointing,” adding, “Whether you realize it or not, you just insinuated that Israel is a byproduct of the Holocaust.”

Rabbi Shmuley Boteach praised Glazer’s Holocaust movie as “incredible” but called him a “fool” for his speech. The author and religious leader went on to say that Glazer “betrayed his people and disgraced himself and trivialized the 6 million martyrs of the Holocaust when he said that Israel’s War in Gaza was hijacking the memory of the Holocaust.”

Though many have spoken out against Glazer’s speech, many more have stepped in to defend him against the backlash and to ensure his quotes are understood in context. Monica Marks, a professor of Middle East politics for NYU Abu Dubai, broke down the controversy in depth, emphasizing that the director’s “key point” was that “Glazer & his team don’t want the Holocaust or their Jewishness, which they clearly care about deeply (hence their making of this very film) used & abused to justify abusing others.”

MSNBC host Chris Hayes weighed in to make sure X users had understood Glazer’s full quote. Another X user dubbed the way Glazer’s comments have been taken out of context as “almost surreal.” Still another called the “twist” of Glazer’s words “absolutely sick.”

One user noted that over 12 hours after the Oscars aired, the Academy Awards has yet to upload Glazer’s speech to its YouTube channel, but that’s a licensing issue more than anything else. An insider familiar with the distribution agreement between ABC and The Oscars told TheWrap that ABC has the exclusive clip rights to a pre-determined list of 10 categories, one of which is International Feature Film. A clip of the acceptance speech is currently available on ABC’s YouTube page as well as Oscar.com and ABC.com.

Following a 30-day agreement window, The Academy will be able to post all of these ABC-exclusive videos on their platforms.

Representatives for Glazer did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment.

The director dedicated his Oscar win to Aleksandra Bystroń-Kołodziejczyk, the Polish World War II resistance worker and witness to the Holocaust who inspired the film. “I dedicate this to her memory and her resistance,” Glazer said.

Once again hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, Sunday’s Oscars were, for the most part, lively, loose and fun. Here are seven of our favorite moments from the show.

Jimmy Kimmel Teases Robert Downey Jr.

A few moments into his monologue Kimmel turned his attention to Best Supporting Actor nominee Robert Downey, Jr. and mentioned that his performance in “Oppenheimer” was a “high point” in his career, a reference to Downey’s very public struggle with drug addiction in the past. The camera cut to Downey, who tapped his nose — to which Kimmel asked if he was saying the joke was too on the nose or a reference to drug use. Downey gamely played along, gesturing in response as Kimmel kept lobbing barbs his way.   

Da’Vine Joy Randolph Delivers a Moving Acceptance Speech

Randolph won every precursor award this season and has said thank you many, many times, but she still managed to deliver a sincere, moving acceptance speech that brought her costar Paul Giamatti to tears. After explaining how her mother encouraged her to get into acting, Randolph said, “For so long I’ve always wanted to be different and now I realize I just need to be myself. And I thank you. I thank you for seeing me. Ron Van Lieu, I thank you when I was the only Black girl in that class, when you saw me and you told me I was enough. And when I told you I don’t see myself, you said, ‘That’s fine. We’re going to forge our own path. You’re going to lay a trail for yourself.’”

“Barbie” Performances: Billie Eilish, Finneas and Ryan Gosling

A study in contrasts: Up first was Billie Eilish and Finneas performing their gorgeous “Barbie” ballad “What Was I Made For?” with such purity and open-hearted emotion that more than one person shed tears in my living room. Finneas clapping for his sister after they finished the song was the icing on the cake.

Then came Ryan Gosling to wash away all those tears, crooning the first lines of “I’m Just Ken” from the audience to the delight of Margot Robbie, Greta Gerwig and pretty much every one else in the house. Clad in a pink bedazzled suit, he performed his “Barbie” alter ego’s bombastic lament with pitch-perfect ironic sincerity.

John Cena Refuses to Streak, Presents Best Costume Design Naked Instead

After referencing Robert Opel, the man who streaked at the 1974 Oscars, Kimmel wondered what it would be like if such a thing happened that night. Then he repeated it until a terrified-looking and thoroughly unclothed John Cena peeked out from behind the set, saying he had changed his mind and would no longer be streaking. Eventually, he shuffled across the stage to the mic in Birkenstocks, looking humiliated as he used an Oscars envelope as a loin cloth. Naturally, the category he presented was Costume Design.

Scott George and the Osage Singers Perform “Wahzhazhe (A Song for My People)”

Martin Scorsese’s epic might have ended up 0 for 10 on Sunday (a crime in and of itself), but Scott George and the Osage Singers electrified the Dolby with their performance of the Best Original Song nominee from the film, “Wahzhazhe (A Song for My People).”

“P.I.M.P” Plays When “Anatomy of a Fall” Wins Best Original Screenplay

50 Cent’s 2003 song “P.I.M.P.” plays a pivotal role in “Anatomy of a Fall,” but hearing it accompany Justine Triet and Arthur Harari as they walked to the stage to accept their Best Original Screenplay Oscar and as they exited the stage still came as a hilariously unexpected treat. In the press room Triet was asked about the song and replied, “I’m 45, and when I was younger I listened lots to 50 Cent. It was the most passive-aggressive song, you know, for the husband. Of course, it’s a classic. I had it in my computer since five years ago. I think my daughter was obsessed by this song so it was a legend in my house.”

Messi, the Dog From “Anatomy of a Fall,” Applauds

After emerging as the unsung hero of awards season, Messi, who played Snoop the dog in “Anatomy of a Fall,” was in the audience at the Dolby and put his little paws together to applaud his own favorite moments of the night.

Emma Stone surprised viewers on Sunday when she won the Oscar for her role of Bella Baxter in Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things.”

Gladstone previously won the Golden Globe as well as the SAG Award for her performance as Mollie Kyle Burkhart in Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon.”

“Super side-eyeing all the ‘Don’t be mean to Emma she deserved it because her performance was miraculous uwu,'” one X user wrote. “Actually no f–k that. She did great, but that absolutely was not a worthier performance. If I was Emma, I would have only taken the Oscar to immediately hand it to Lily.”

Stone also appeared to be shocked that she won, and she approached the stage in tears with her dress torn in the back.

“I think the reason Lily Gladstone being snubbed hurts so much is because, besides the fact that she had the best performance, Native American actors do not get this opportunity nearly as much as they should,” another X user wrote. “There’s no guarantee she’ll be back even though she should.”

Gladstone applauded Stone as she retrieved the second Oscar of her career from fellow actresses Jennifer Lawrence, Charlize Theron, Michelle Yeoh and more.

“Lily Gladstone was the first performance I’ve seen that I was like, ‘That performance deserves an Oscar right now,'” another user wrote. “And of course, she lost to the Disney star mocking mentally disabled people and having uncomfortable sex for three hours #Oscars2024.”

Meanwhile, others expressed disappointment while still acknowledging Stone’s talent.

“‘Poor Things’ isn’t particularly good, but Emma is fantastic and I’d never deny that. Lily was just better. Her performance was such a delicate tightrope,” one user wrote. “And she still managed to imbue Molly with an ease and lightness that would otherwise be impossible to convey in that story.”

Ahead of the final category of the night, Kimmel took the stage one last time, congratulating the winners and joking that everyone better make sure to keep their winners cards straight ahead of Best Picture to avoid another 2017 mix-up. However, he made sure to take a moment to pat himself on the back.

“You know, doing this show is not about me, and I appreciate you having me, it was really about you, and Emma [Stone], and all these great actors and actresses and filmmakers,” Kimmel said. “But I was told we have like an extra minute, and I’m really proud of something. I was wondering if I could share it with you.”

At that, Kimmel pulled out his phone and began reading a review of his hosting.

“Has there EVER been a WORSE HOST than Jimmy Kimmel at the Oscars,” Kimmel recited. “His opening was that of a less than average person trying too hard to be something which he is not, and never can be. Get rid of Kimmel and perhaps replace him with another washed up, but cheap, ABC ‘talent,’ George Slopanopoulos. He would make everybody on stage look bigger, stronger and more glamorous.”

Glossing over the rest of the review, Kimmel read the final line: “MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”

“OK, now, see if you can guess which former president just posted that on Truth Social,” Kimmel joked. “Anyone? No?”

Indeed, it wasn’t a joke. Donald Trump went on a long rant about Kimmel on Truth Social, calling the ceremony “politically correct.” But Kimmel wasn’t phased by Trump’s words.

“Thank you for watching! I’m surprised you’re still awake — isn’t past your jail time?” he fired back. Watch the moment in the video above.

While presenting, DeVito, who played the Penguin in 1992’s “Batman Returns,” pointed to Keaton in the audience and said, “There he is! He’s right here!”

“You have a lot of nerve to show your face tonight,” Schwarzenegger, who played Mr. Freeze in 1997’s “Batman & Robin,” added.

Keaton, sporting a very dapper cravat that would make Bruce Wayne proud, played along and motioned to both, “Bring it on!”

The playful bit ended with DeVito warning Keaton, “We’ll see you at the Governors Ball!”

Will Batman be able to handle both the Penguin and Mr. Freeze at the after party? Tune in Monday morning to find out.

In the meantime, Keaton can currently be seen as the Dark Knight in 2023’s “The Flash,” which TheWrap first reported when he was cast.

The actor previously explained to Backstage’s “In the Envelope: The Actor’s Podcast” why he walked away from the role, despite being asked to return for a third film.

Keaton admitted that his interest in the role was more about the man, not the superhero. He said, “It was always Bruce Wayne. It was never Batman. To me, I know the name of the movie is Batman, and it’s hugely iconic and very cool and [culturally] iconic and, because of Tim Burton, artistically iconic.”
