The post Sydney Sweeney Says ‘Euphoria’ Season 3 Is ‘So Different’ From First 2: ‘People Will Be Really Amazed’ appeared first on TheWrap.

]]>
Sydney Sweeney teased Monday that “Euphoria” Season 3 will mark a change in pace for the hit HBO teen drama.

“People will be really amazed with what Season 3 becomes,” the actress said in a  recent GQ profile. “I think that’s good because Seasons 1 and 2 were so different.”

The actress, currently touting the release of her upcoming horror film “Immaculate” following its well-received SXSW premiere, Sweeney will next return to play Cassie Howard in “Euphoria” in “the next two months,” according to the outlet.

Looking ahead to a potential Season 4, Sweeney said, “I think that if there’s more story to tell with Cassie then, yes, because I do love that role and I love the community. But it’s whatever does the story justice.”

Looking to her other recent project, “Madame Web,” the actress revealed she’d be open to a sequel film and emphasized the “strategic business decision” behind her joining the Dakota Johnson-led project with Sony and Marvel.

“I think that if the story is right and you have the right team, I would love to,” Sweeney said of a hypothetical follow-up to “Madame Web.”

She also identified her choice to accept the role of Julia Carpenter as a stepping stone to other big projects with the studio.

“To me, that film was a building block, it’s what allowed me to build a relationship with Sony. Without doing ‘Madame Web’ I wouldn’t have a relationship with the decision-makers over there,” she explained. “Everything in my career I do not just for that story, but strategic business decisions. Because I did that, I was able to sell ‘Anyone But You.’ I was able to get ‘Barbarella.’”

And as far as another hypothetical sequel to her work, Sweeney turned her attention to “Anyone But You” with Glen Powell, saying that there are “a bunch of different ideas” are being tossed around. The actress emphasized similar themes of new, good material should the sequel get greenlit.

“We just want to make sure that whatever we do gives the audience what they want and at the same time is new and exciting for us.”

But first up is “Immaculate,” hitting theaters Friday.

Original ‘The Crow’ Director Says Fan Backlash to Remake ‘Speaks Volumes’ https://www.thewrap.com/alex-proyas-the-crow-remake-backlash/ https://www.thewrap.com/alex-proyas-the-crow-remake-backlash/#respond Mon, 18 Mar 2024 22:26:31 +0000 https://www.thewrap.com/?p=7514674 "Brandon Lee died making it and it was finished as a testament to his lost brilliance and tragic loss," says Alex Proyas

The post Original ‘The Crow’ Director Says Fan Backlash to Remake ‘Speaks Volumes’ appeared first on TheWrap.

]]>
Alex Proyas, director of the 1994 film “The Crow,” spoke out about the backlash to the upcoming remake of his film, saying in a diplomatic way that he doesn’t think it’s a good idea.

“I really don’t get any joy from seeing negativity about any fellow filmmakers work,” Proyas wrote on Facebook. “And I’m certain the cast and crew really had all good intentions, as we all do on any film. So it pains me to say any more on this topic, but I think the fan’s [sic] response speaks volumes.”

“The Crow” became an infamous part of film history due to the on-set death of its lead star Brandon Lee, who was fatally shot by a prop gun during filming. Lee, the 28-year-old son of martial arts legend Bruce Lee, plays a musician who is brought back from the dead to seek vengeance upon the gang that murdered him and his fiancée.

Lee was killed during the final days of shooting on the film, which was completed with the use of stunt doubles and digital editing. The film became a box office success and a cult classic with fans revering Lee’s performance to this day.

“‘The Crow’ is not just a movie. Brandon Lee died making it and it was finished as a testament to his lost brilliance and tragic loss. It is his legacy. That’s how it should remain,” Proyas wrote.

The remake, directed by Rupert Sanders and set for release by Lionsgate in June, got its first trailer released this past week with “It” star Bill Skarsgård playing The Crow.

“Obviously, it was a terrible tragedy and it’s definitely something that we’ve always had in mind through the making of the film,” Sanders said of the remake in a Vanity Fair interview. “Brandon was an original voice and I think he will always be synonymous with ‘The Crow’ and I hope he’s proud of what we’ve done and how we’ve brought the story back again. His soul is very much alive in this film. There’s a real fragility and beauty to his version of the Crow, and I think Bill feels like he is a successor to that.”

Rian Johnson and Ram Bergman’s T-Street Set 2-Film Producing Deal With Warner Bros. https://www.thewrap.com/rian-johnson-ram-bergman-t-street-warner-bros-deal/ https://www.thewrap.com/rian-johnson-ram-bergman-t-street-warner-bros-deal/#respond Mon, 18 Mar 2024 21:30:00 +0000 https://www.thewrap.com/?p=7514603 The agreement comes on the heels of T-Street's Oscar-winning "American Fiction"

The post Rian Johnson and Ram Bergman’s T-Street Set 2-Film Producing Deal With Warner Bros. appeared first on TheWrap.

]]>
Rian Johnson and Ram Bergman’s T-Street production outfit has signed a two-picture producing deal with Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group.

This followes the release of T-Street’s Academy Award-winning “American Fiction” and on the heels of the release of “Snack Shack,” via Republic Pictures. The T-Street deal was forged by co-chairs and CEOs Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy. It marks the first deal between T-Street and Warner Bros.

Since it was launched in 2019, T-Street has delivered notable films like “Knives Out” and its Netflix-released sequel “Glass Onion,” Cord Jefferson’s “American Fiction,” and Chloe Domont’s button-pushing “Fair Play.” On the TV side of things, they are responsible for the outstanding mystery series “Poker Face” and Netflix’s upcoming sci-fi epic “3 Body Problem.” Johnson is currently at work on the third installment in the Benoit Blanc series, with filming scheduled to begin later this year.

“Rian and Ram are the masterminds of so many wildly entertaining films and are a brilliant creative duo who will be right at home among the Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group family of storytellers who are working to bring more great movies to theatergoers globally.” said De Luca and Abdy in an official statement. “As Warner Bros. Discovery continues to invest in the future of entertainment for audiences of all ages, we are beyond excited to have Rian and Ram here with us.”

“Mike and Pam’s renewed commitment to original storytelling and the theatrical experience make Warner Bros. Discovery an ideal place to help us bring the filmmakers we love to audiences around the world on a grand scale,” said T-Street’s Johnson and Bergman in an official statement. “We’re thrilled to have them as partners.”

Johnson and Bergman have been creative partners since Johnson’s debut feature, the high school noir “Brick,” continuing on projects like “The Brothers Bloom,” “Looper” and Johnson’s trip to a galaxy far, far away, “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.”

Over 450 Jewish Entertainment Figures Denounce Jonathan Glazer for ‘Drawing a Moral Equivalency’ Between Nazi Regime, Israeli Nation https://www.thewrap.com/open-letter-denounces-jonathan-glazer-oscars-speech/ https://www.thewrap.com/open-letter-denounces-jonathan-glazer-oscars-speech/#respond Mon, 18 Mar 2024 20:59:14 +0000 https://www.thewrap.com/?p=7514620 The Oscar-winning “Zone of Interest” filmmaker came under fire last week for his divisive acceptance speech

The post Over 450 Jewish Entertainment Figures Denounce Jonathan Glazer for ‘Drawing a Moral Equivalency’ Between Nazi Regime, Israeli Nation appeared first on TheWrap.

]]>
More than 450 Jewish creatives, executives and other Hollywood professionals have signed an open letter denouncing the speech “Zone of Interest” director Jonathan Glazer made while accepting the Oscar for Best International Feature.

Glazer’s speech included comments on Israel-Hamas war and what he said was a misuse of Jewish identity and the history of the Holocaust.

The signees include Debra Messing, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Amy Pascal, Amy Sherman-Palladino, Eli Roth and Sherry Lansing. Many of the signees have signed other open letters in support of Israel following the Hamas attack on Oct. 7, 2023.

Many observers have focused on a particular line from Glazer’s speech: “We stand here as men who refute their Jewishness and the Holocaust being hijacked by an occupation which has led to conflict for so many innocent people.” Some have taken that to mean that he was refuting his Jewishness, though “refute” in the statement refers to “being hijacked.”

The group behind the open letter invoked Glazer’s Oscars night language in the open letter with the line, “We refute our Jewishness being hijacked for the purpose of drawing a moral equivalence between a Nazi regime that sought to exterminate a race of people, and an Israeli nation that seeks to avert its own extermination.”

It continues, “The use of words like ‘occupation’ to describe an indigenous Jewish people defending a homeland that dates back thousands of years, and has been recognized as a state by the United Nations, distorts history. It gives credence to the modern blood libel that fuels a growing anti-Jewish hatred around the world, in the United States, and in Hollywood.”

Glazer, however, has received support from other high-profile Hollywood personalities, including applause at the Academy Awards themselves following his speech. Among others, “Poor Things” star Mark Ruffalo enthusiastically applauded. At the same time, the film’s own executive producer Danny Cohen is among those who’ve spoken against Glazer’s comments.

Glazer’s Oscars speech also referred to both the victims of the Hamas attack and of the ongoing Israeli military campaign in Gaza. “Whether the victims of October the 7th in Israel or the ongoing attack on Gaza, all the victims of this dehumanization, how do we resist?” Glazer said.

Read the full letter and see those who have signed onto it thus far, below:

We are Jewish creatives, executives and Hollywood professionals.

We refute our Jewishness being hijacked for the purpose of drawing a moral equivalence between a Nazi regime that sought to exterminate a race of people, and an Israeli nation that seeks to avert its own extermination.

Every civilian death in Gaza is tragic. But Israel is not targeting civilians. It is targeting Hamas. The moment Hamas releases the hostages and surrenders is the moment this heartbreaking war ends. This has been true since the Hamas attacks of October 7th.

The use of words like “occupation” to describe an indigenous Jewish people defending a homeland that dates back thousands of years, and has been recognized as a state by the United Nations, distorts history.

It gives credence to the modern blood libel that fuels a growing anti-Jewish hatred around the world, in the United States, and in Hollywood.  The current climate of growing antisemitism only underscores the need for the Jewish State of Israel, a place which will always take us in, as no state did during the Holocaust depicted in Mr. Glazer’s film.

Director Raoul Peck, who helmed the 2016 documentary “I Am Not Your Negro,” has announced his new documentary project. “The Hands That Held the Knives” will detail the assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse in 2021.

The documentary, which took over two years to make, is said to be in the same vein as the works of Graham Greene and John Le Carré. Peck was given access to the people involved in Moïse’s killing, and even secretly filmed in Haiti’s prison system. The documentary will lay out Haitian politics, its relationship to the U.S. and the corruption and criminality the country deals with, including drugs and weapons trafficking.

“I am eager to tell my country’s real story beyond the usual exotic clichés and preposterous clickbait,” Peck said in a prepared statement. “I want to reveal for once, without holding back, the core stories and real reasons for Haiti’s tragic situation.”

Peck’s previous work includes the documentary “I Am Not Your Negro,” about racism in the United States alongside the career of writer James Baldwin. The documentary would go on to win a BAFTA and César Award, as well as being nominated for an Oscar for Best Documentary. He has also crafted the film “Silver Dollar Road” and the HBO miniseries “Exterminate All the Brutes.”

Peck is producing the film under his Velvet Films banner alongside Jigsaw Productions, with Imagine Documentaries, Anonymous Content and Double Agent, who is financing the project. Alex Gibney, for Jigsaw, and Blair Foster are also producers on the project. Sara Bernstein is executive producer on behalf of Imagine along with Anonymous Content’s Nick Shumaker, David Levine and Jessica Grimshaw. Dana O’Keefe produces on behalf of Double Agent, with Teddy Schwarzman, Yariv Milchan and Michael Heimler executive producing.

“This is a story that only Raoul Peck can tell,” Gibney said. “A former Minister of Culture in Haiti, Raoul has been in the belly of the beast of Haiti’s politics and is the only filmmaker alive with the knowledge of the country and the extraordinary skill as a filmmaker to be able to tell this tale, which has global implications, as governments fall, one by one, to the ruthless pursuit of money and power.”

Bill Hader is set to star as “The Cat in the Hat” for an upcoming animated feature film from Warner Bros. Pictures Animation and Dr. Seuss Enterprises, the companies announced on Monday.

The animated feature will hit theaters worldwide on Mar. 6, 2026.

Along with Hader, the all-star voice cast includes Quinta Brunson (“Abbott Elementary”), Bowen Yang (“SNL”), Xochitl Gomez (“Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness”), Matt Berry (“What We Do in the Shadows”) and Paula Pell (“Girls5eva”).

The official logline for the new animated movie is as follows: In the wonderfully whimsical tradition of Dr. Seuss, “The Cat in the Hat” comes to the big screen in his animated theatrical feature film debut, doing what he does best — spreading joy to “happyless” kids. In the film, The Cat takes on his toughest assignment yet … to cheer a pair of siblings struggling with their move to a new town.

“The Cat in the Hat” is being written and directed by Alessandro Carloni and Erica Rivinoja, with Daniela Mazzucato and Jared Stern producing. Susan Brandt and Hader are executive producing. DNEG Animation will be the animation studio partner.

“We are overjoyed to partner with our friends at Dr. Seuss to take audiences of all ages on an adventure into the beloved world of ‘The Cat in the Hat,’” Bill Damaschke, president of Warner Bros. Pictures Animation, said in a statement to TheWrap. “With this incredible voice cast led by Bill Hader as the fun-loving, agent of chaos himself and our filmmakers Alessandro and Erica at the helm, we look forward to sharing this Seussian cinematic spectacle with audiences everywhere in 2026!”

Brandt, president and CEO of Dr. Seuss Enterprises, added: “We are excited to see such an exceptional group of talent join the effort to bring this iconic property to the screen as an animated feature. It’s been an amazing experience collaborating with the team from Warner Bros. Pictures Animation so far, as they truly understand what it takes to capture the magic of ‘The Cat in the Hat’ and share his brand of imagination and joy with a new generation of Dr. Seuss fans.”

“The Cat in the Hat” first captured the imaginations of young readers with its whimsical story and iconic red and white striped hat when it debuted in 1957. Nearly 70 years later, the story remains a cherished classic.

The new film kicks off a slate of animated Dr. Seuss projects from both studios, building an extensive universe centered around the classic children’s books and their whimsical worlds.

A live-action “The Cat in the Hat” starring Mike Myers, Dakota Fanning and Spencer Breslin premiered in 2003.

The Insneider first reported the news.

“Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver” is nearly here. And a new trailer, which you can watch above, showcases what we can expect from the anticipated follow-up.

If you missed the first “Rebel Moon,” subtitled “A Child of Fire,” then you missed Sofia Boutella as Kora, a young woman who has put her warrior ways behind her but is forced to fight when an evil galactic empire threatens her small backwater planet.

Kora travels around the cosmos in an attempt to recruit fighters. There’s Djimon Hounsou as a down-on-his-luck gladiator, Doona Bae as a cyborg with a sword, Staz Nair as a guy who has a special bond with animals, etc. Once she gets everybody together, they think they have thwarted the sinister forces of darkness … but as the movie ends and she returns to her peaceful valley it is made clear that not only is the villainous Atticus Noble (Ed Skrein) still alive, but they’re coming for Kora and her people next.

This new trailer does seem to deliver on the promise of the first film. Kora and the crew will pull together and train the peaceful people of her planet, and there will be a ton of action. Even Jimmy, the robot voiced by Anthony Hopkins, will put his peaceful ways behind him to kill a bunch of baddies.

Alongside “Rebel Moon — Part Two,” Snyder is also prepping an extended director’s cuts of both films, which Snyder says will total around six hours. (Of course, these will be released after the PG-13 versions.) There are also planned sequels and spin-offs, although we haven’t heard much about those so they might have fallen by the wayside. (Former Netflix exec Scott Stuber was a huge champion and it’s unclear if his exit will jeopardize the streamer’s relationship with Snyder.)

“Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver” will hit Netflix on April 19.

‘Wish’ Sets April Streaming Date on Disney+ https://www.thewrap.com/wish-disney-plus-streaming-release-date/ https://www.thewrap.com/wish-disney-plus-streaming-release-date/#respond Mon, 18 Mar 2024 16:22:22 +0000 https://www.thewrap.com/?p=7514451 The animated musical includes the voices of Ariana DeBose and Chris Pine

Walt Disney Animation Studios announced Monday that the musical feature “Wish,” which made more than $250 at the global box office, will premiere on the Disney+ streaming service in April.

The film takes place in the fictional town of Rosas wherein the charming King Magnifico (voiced by Chris Pine) is able to grant people’s wishes. But when local girl Asha (Ariana DeBose) discovers what Magnifico really does with the wishes, it’s up to her and a fallen star to stop him and save the town.

“Wish” is directed by Oscar-winning director Chris Buck and Fawn Veerasunthorn, and produced by Peter Del Vecho and Juan Pablo Reyes Lancaster Jones. Jennifer Lee and Allison Moore wrote the script. Julia Michaels and Benjamin Rice provided the film’s original song with a score by composer Dave Metzger.

During an interview with TheWrap back in January, co-director Buck said it was a challenge to honor Disney’s entire centennial in just one film. “The goal was there. It all stemmed from: How do we celebrate our legacy and yet also celebrate the future? My dream would be that if people come out of this movie, they would say, ‘Wow, that feels like one of the classics, but it feels new,’” Buck said. “You get that feeling of both.” He added that it became a question of, “Can we embrace our legacy but also embrace the CG, so that it’s not just one or the other?”

“Wish” would amass $253.2 million in global box office. TheWrap’s review summed up the film as “for a company that’s come so far, it’s frustrating that the story within “Wish” feels so thin. That being said, go and soak it in. The songs and character will stick with you far longer.”

You can stream “Wish” on Disney+ starting April 3.

Bob Iger and Disney Backed in Board Battle by Glass Lewis Recommendation https://www.thewrap.com/disney-proxy-fight-glass-lewis/ https://www.thewrap.com/disney-proxy-fight-glass-lewis/#respond Mon, 18 Mar 2024 15:39:23 +0000 https://www.thewrap.com/?p=7514434 The independent proxy advisory company recommended that shareholders vote for the 12 Disney-selected director nominees

Disney and Bob Iger have received the support of the independent proxy advisory company Glass Lewis in its ongoing proxy battle. Glass Lewis recommended that Disney shareholders vote for the 12 Disney-selected director nominees in a report released on Monday.

The company’s report also recommended rejecting the nominees put forward by Nelson Peltz’s Trian Partners and another firm, Blackwells Capital, ahead of Disney’s annual meeting on April 3. In its reasoning, Glass Lewis emphasized The Walt Disney Company’s clear strategy, its strong additions to the board and “measurable shifts” in the business since the return of Iger.

“We are pleased that Glass Lewis recognizes the strength of our highly qualified nominees and supports our plans to return this iconic company to a period of sustained growth and shareholder value creation,” Mark Parker, chairman of The Walt Disney Company Board of Directors, said in a statement to press. “In its recommendation, Glass Lewis clearly identifies the strength of the diverse skillsets across our Board nominees, the credibility of our succession planning process and the recent changes to the Board and compensation program and the promise of our recent efforts to bolster growth and value creation to position Disney for the future.”

The Glass Lewis report specifically noted that Disney is undertaking a “credible effort” to rearrange “key operational priorities” under Iger’s leadership and pointed to the last 15 months of Iger’s return as an “adequate” opportunity to establish a “more credible succession program.”

“While it remains too early to say with certainty that each of those programs will prove successful, we believe it is similarly too early to suggest there exists adequate cause for investors to support alternate solicitations which may prove significantly less accretive to Disney’s trajectory, by comparison,” the report reads.

The proxy fight against Disney is currently being spearheaded by Trian Fund Management founder Nelson Peltz. The activist investor has also sought reinforcements from shareholders at ValueAct Capital and Blackwells Capital. Essentially, what Peltz wants from this fight is for Disney to develop a succession plan after Iger. He also wants the company to attribute compensation with performance, cut costs and reinstate Disney’s dividend by fiscal year 2025. Iger has been vocal about wanting to retire in 2026.

“Abbott Elementary” star Lisa Ann Walter shared with People that she’d be up for revisiting her 1998 version of the classic “Parent Trap,” telling the outlet, “Yes, absolutely.” She was only too happy to speak about her “Parent Trap” costar, Lindsay Lohan, at the NAACP Image Awards on Saturday.

“I would love to go back for another version of it — or if [Lohan] wants to come on to our show, I’d love that, too,” she added.

This isn’t the first time Walter has discussed bringing Lohan onto the hit ABC sitcom. In January, she told Entertainment Weekly that the younger actress could play a relative. “I guess we’d have to make her a relative since we’re both redheads — since I’m a ‘redhead,’ and she actually is,” Walter explained.

In February, Walter brought up the possibility of reviving her “Parent Trap” character again, this time at the SAG Awards. She told E! News, “What we get online more than anything is kids that are now in their 20s and 30s that say, ‘You were our childhood and we grew up with you.'”

“I think, like ‘Abbott Elementary,’ there is just a real longing for people to feel good and safe, and so any movie like that, yeah, let’s do it.”

Walter added, “I think that there is a nostalgia [and] a longing for movies that are feel good that also are multi-generational. ‘Parent Trap’ also was a romance and it appealed to grown people, to grown women, to people that want to see a happy ending after something is tragic and a family has divorced.”

The popular “Parent Trap” remake starred Lohan in her film debut as identical twins Hallie Parker and Annie James. The pair are set on reuniting their divorced parents, played by the late Natasha Richardson and Dennis Quaid. Walter played Chessy, the nanny to Quaid’s daughter Hallie.

The original 1961 film starred Hayley Mills as twins Sharon McKendrick and Susan Evers. Though the movie wasn’t a major success at the box office, Mills was awarded the Academy Juvenile Award at the 33rd Oscars ceremony and the film became a classic of the Disney canon. She shot the movie after wrapping production on “Pollyanna.”

In 2021, Mills told Vulture that her introduction to Hollywood was relatively smooth. Of “Parent Trap,” Mills told the outlet, “I didn’t have to audition. I was so lucky. I did one audition when I was 12 for the first movie I ever made. And I didn’t even feel that that was an audition. It was more like a screen test. I never felt like the job depended upon me.”

The actress enjoyed a strong relationship with Disney for two decades. She added, “And after that, I never did another audition for years. The first time I had to do an audition, I think, was 20 years later. And it was a horrible shock! It’s a dreadful experience to have to go through.”

In an interview with TheWrap from the same year, Mills admitted there were drawbacks to fame — namely her education. As she said, “It was a great childhood in many respects. I loved the Disney studio, and Walt, and there was never any exploitation. Still, I had to forfeit friends, as I was always leaving my boarding school and struggling to catch up. I believe education is fundamental and mine definitely was impacted.”
